Philip McCracken was born in Bellingham, WA in 1928. He began studying pre-law at the University of Washington, but was interrupted by the Korean War, where he served as an army reservist. Upon return, he changed to an art major and graduated in 1953. He was then accepted to study with famed sculptor Henri Moore in England, which influenced him greatly. After England, McCracken and his new wife, Anne, moved to New York where Morris Graves introduced him to the Willard Gallery. McCracken found success in New York, but deeply missed the Pacific Northwest landscape. In 1955, he and Anne moved to the McCracken family’s waterfront cabin on Guemes Island to raise their family, where he continues to live and work today. McCracken has exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Northwest Art, to name a few.
