Everett Dupen was born and raised in California, and began sculpting at a young age -- an article in the Hollywood Daily Citizen called the thirteen-year old Dupen "The Genius Among Us."  He attended the University of Southern California and Yale, and later studied at Harvard and the American Academy of Art in Rome.

Dupen married Charlotte Nicks, a dancer with the New York Metropolitan Opera's corps du ballet, and moved briefly to St. Louis before beginning a 38 year career at the University of Washington in Seattle.  As a Professor of Art, he helped build the University of Washington's sculpture division into an internationally renowned program. He is acknowledged as an influential teacher, mentor and friend to generations of Northwest artists.

In addition to teaching, his own art practice was known for figurative pieces in stone, wood, terra cotta, and bronze.  Installations of his work include the DuPen Fountain at the Seattle Center, and the Joel Pritchard Building at the Washington State Capitol.
