    Fay Chong (1912-1973) was born in Canton, China on March 2, 1912. He attended the University of Washington, the Leon Derbyshire School of Art, and privately studied with Mark Tobey. He was a member of the Northwest Printmakers, the Northwest Watercolor Society, Puget Sound Group of Painters and the Washington Art Association. Chong was part of Seattle’s WPA Art Project during the Great Depression and produced numerous paintings and blockprints during that time. He was also the Designer for the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory for thirteen years and taught at several Seattle schools.

    He has had solo exhibitions at Bellevue Art Museum, Portland State University, Otto Seligman Gallery, Seattle, Skagit Valley College, Mt. Vernon, WA, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California, Reed College, Portland, OR, Portland Art Museum, Zoe Dusanne Gallery, Seattle, Frye Art Museum, Seattle, and Seattle Art Museum. He is included in the permanent collections of Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Seattle Public Library, Phillips Memorial Gallery, Washington, DC., Baltimore Museum, and University of Kansas, Topeka.
