    Spencer Moseley (1925-1998) was born in Bellingham, WA in 1925. Moseley received both a BA and MFA from the University of Washington. Following that, he studied with Fernand Leger in Paris in 1948. In 1951, Moseley became a professor at the University of Washington’s School of Art, teaching drawing, painting, design, and the history of painting. From 1951-1963 he was also the Chairman of the University of Washington General Education Program and in the 1970’s he traveled in Europe extensively. He served as Director of the School of Art and the Acting Director of the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington from 1967 until 1977. During this time, he established and was the General Editor of the Index of Northwest Art.

     He wrote and co-wrote several important books and publications on Northwest artists including History of Painting in the Western World (Frontier Press Co. 1964) and he also lectured and published articles on the visual arts. His work was exhibited nationally in group and one-person shows in Oakland, Santa Barbara, Fresno, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Reno, Fort Worth, TX, Philadelphia, PA, Toledo and Akron, OH, Lincoln, MA, Tucson, AZ; Denver, CO; Portland, OR and in Seattle at the Seattle Art Museum, the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. He also exhibited internationally in Kobe, Japan in 1965 and in Auckland, New Zealand in 1971.
